Vehicle and Equipment Management Agency Heavy Duty Shop
Client: Manitoba Infrastructure & Transportation
Location: Beausejour, MB
Completion: 2016
Project Details: Parkwest Projects Ltd was the project’s General Contractor. The addition links two existing buildings dating from the 1970s; the first being a two-storey shop/office facility, the second, a heavy equipment storage building. By linking and combining two existing buildings into one large facility, major upgrades to the life safety systems were necessitated, including the addition of a new sprinkler system and addressable fire alarm system throughout. The addition consists of a new four-bay heavy equipment shop with related second storey mechanical space. The structure includes a structural concrete slab to support extremely high dead and live loads and a structural steel frame with concrete block infill walls. The envelope consists of a high performance exterior insulation assembly and standing seam metal cladding. Clerestory windows provide natural light to the entire shop. The new shop is equipped with a twelve-ton overhead crane and vehicle exhaust extraction system that serve all four shop bays. The new bays are contiguous with the original structural grid, permitting longer equipment to occupy space in both the addition and original shop area. The project also involved extensive work within the existing buildings, including structural and ventilation upgrades, addition of a new fire alarm and sprinkler system throughout and asbestos remediation. Coordination of existing program activities and construction phasing was required to ensure ongoing use of the facility.
